Our Story
Steelhaven began as a dream three years ago for me (T.J. Fenske). While living abroad in Thailand with my wife, we noticed numerous shipping container builds, from beautiful homes to fascinating restaurants and hotels. With my interest now piqued, I conducted further research online and came across a variety of videos showcasing alluring shipping container homes all across the world. I was enthralled by their industrial but modern and sleek design and amazed by how creative one could be with them. Additionally, I saw how they truly provided a unique and one-of-a-kind experience for residents and guests. That one day of watching videos turned into hours of researching shipping container homes over the following months, and alas the idea was planted: we're going to build a container home!
But when, how, and where were major questions to be answered. My wife, Terri, thought I was crazy but came along for the journey anyways as the lead home designer (check out her design blog - The Forward Home). A year later, I brought the idea to my parents, Tom and Cindy Fenske, and my sister, Eryn Aubey, and they decided to join in the dream as well. With an open plot of land, Tom had owned for nearly 40 years and a design idea for a three container home, we all went to work. In what we thought would take 3-4 months to construct, actually ended up being 20 months of challenges, hurdles, and delays. Rightfully so, the first ever shipping container home in Northern Michigan required more thorough reviews by county inspectors to meet code. Supply chain issues and colder than expected weather didn't help either. In the end, the hard work and long wait was worth it and while we've enjoyed every minute in the home, we want to share it with others now. After experiencing the peaceful forest surroundings, hearing the morning birds sing, and taking in the many sights and activities in the area, we realized Steelhaven is truly a refuge--a place to escape the busyness and noise of life so you can rest, unwind, and recharge. Ultimately, we hope it's a place where memories can be made and a home you'll want to visit again and again. So unpack, relax, and enjoy your stay!
